It’s hella suspicious that Amy Seimetz, a female director, left The Idol because she was taking it in “too much of a female perspective” when the show is literally in the perspective of a woman??? And instead of replacing her with another female director, they replaced her with the notoriously voyeuristic navel-gazer, Sam Levinson.
Whether or not you like his work, the choice to replace a female director with a male one for a series that highlights women’s issues is poor, to say the least. And now with rumours that the show has turned into a p0rnographic male fantasy under his helm, it really goes to show how the pot calls the kettle black.
Sam Levinson is a freak but The Weeknd is no better than him for basically going “Nah fire the feminist bring in the man that will make this show about me and my pornographic fantasies”
just saw the absolutely rot-brained take on Twitter and was like, surely this is a man. and not only is it a man, itās THAT man, the one who wrote the weird post apocalyptic tra horror novel where all the evil terfs have guns and also jk rowling dies by being burned alive. 0% surprised.
i hope even libfems wake up a little with this show. if you think sam levinsons fetish is art, if you think that this kind of exploitative media exists in a vacuum with no greater societal context that has everything to do with viewing women as sexual commodities, then i donāt know what to tell you.
With all the talk of The Idol being terrible- especially because the series’ vision and creative control was taken away from a woman and then given to two men- I want to remind people that there are better series out there that explore similar themes. If you’re open to watching anime, Oshi no Ko and Perfect Blue do the whole “the dark side of the entertainment industry, especially for women” thing WAY better.
Full disclosure, I haven’t actually watched The Idol but I have watched a lot of reviews/read a lot of the discourse about it and from what I understand during its production it went from being about critiquing how the entertainment industry treats women to basically being nothing but more of that same exploitation itself. Meanwhile, Oshi no Ko and Perfect Blue actually explore the psychological, emotional, and physical effects the entertainment industry has on its female stars and how dangerous it can be. I highly recommend both!
I have never wanted to see a show less than HBO’s The Idol so I will not watch it (and I say that as a fan of miss Jennie Ruby Jane), but everything I’ve seen of it I’ve seen against my will on social media and I wish I could go back to a time when I hadn’t seen The Weeknd trying to act out sexy scenes with that horrible wig and the charisma and sex appeal of a dry brick, like from what I’ve seen and heard all the women on the show are doing great and when you focus on their stories it’s much more interesting without seeing Abel’s self-insert horny and corny character of Tedros (?)
